A great, tense psychology thriller。

Excellent 👌 « Morality isn’t a rule, or a plumb line that swings back and forth。 It is something that is part of each of us, like a gene that evolves over time; but unlike other genes, it is affected and altered by the decisions we make and don’t make, by compassion, empathy, forgiveness。 »

Interesting theme and moderate suspenseful-but fast moving and a pretty good read。

i found this to be slow paced and not engaging in terms of suspense or tension; I did not care for the lead character and found her behavior and situation somewhat predictable in terms of how the plot unfolded and yet also unbelievable for a seemingly savvy police officer。 The narration was great, that did not impact my review, and I simply think that this book was not for me as so many people seem to enjoy it and find it suspenseful。

Michael Robotham cannot write a bad book and this one is amazing。 The characters come alive with a protagonist that the reader can pull for and hope that all ends well for her。 My hope is that this is the beginning of a new series。 I'll be first in line to read it。 Michael Robotham cannot write a bad book and this one is amazing。 The characters come alive with a protagonist that the reader can pull for and hope that all ends well for her。 My hope is that this is the beginning of a new series。 I'll be first in line to read it。 。。。more

Uniquely creepy Robotham delivers a sensational novel with this anything but typical "female cop vs。 Killer" storyline。 The usual narrative of a strong female lead, who manages to wrestle with past traumas while maintaining a complete adherence to a value system set solidly in good and bad, is nowhere to be seen。 I am hoping this develops into a series!! This book was on a whole other level of insanity so much so that I still can’t wrap the entirety of it around my head。 The level of misogyny that the female lead had to deal with for one was just disturbing and it makes me have all the more respect for women in the police forces。 When one side character went as far as to say that women police officers are only good for dealing with “rape and assault victims” or with giving family members bad news? I all but threw my iPad with how unbelievably angry I was。 Philomena the main character not only had to deal with misogyny in the workplace but with her co-workers treating her unfairly all because her father and uncles were criminals。 Despite Phil proving time and time again that she was on the side of the law, they all treated her like she was a spy for her family。 When she helps a woman and goes up against an abusive & corrupt police officer。。 you can just imagine whose side her bosses were on proving that police officers are a “boys only” club。 What I for one was not expecting was what would come of helping a victim of abuse。 The danger on all sides that Philomena unwittingly puts herself & her fiancé in is just crazy。 There are so many twists and turns in this book that you will not be able to stop reading until you see the entirety of it through。 。。。more

4 and a half stars。 A fabulous and exciting psychological thriller that shows the Michael Robotham is just getting better and better。 Have reserved the other half star for his next one!

2。5 stars, just not up to par for one of his books。 Felt dragged out, flat and predictable。

It was fine but I expected more from this author and generally don’t like stories that feature stalking or gaslighting heavily。 The story follows Phil who is a police officer but also the daughter of the local monster and has to walk between the two carefully。 She helps a young woman, Tempe, who is fleeing domestic abuse and tries to go the extra mile for her。 However Tempe starts becoming a bigger and bigger part of her life and the more she integrates the more off the rails Phil’s life goes。 I It was fine but I expected more from this author and generally don’t like stories that feature stalking or gaslighting heavily。 The story follows Phil who is a police officer but also the daughter of the local monster and has to walk between the two carefully。 She helps a young woman, Tempe, who is fleeing domestic abuse and tries to go the extra mile for her。 However Tempe starts becoming a bigger and bigger part of her life and the more she integrates the more off the rails Phil’s life goes。 It’s a very classic story with a minor addition involving the Irish mob。 It wasn’t anything novel or special and none of the characters really stood out。 A forgettable thriller。 。。。more

The plot of WHEN YOU ARE MINE was worth five stars, but the writing level was one star。 Hence my overall three star rating。The plot contained several strands, connecting the narrator, Philomena, a police officer to:(1) a male police officer, Darren Goodall, a domestic abuser, and his abused wife;(2) Tempe Brown, Goodall’s former mistress, also abused by Goodall, and who, once freed from her abuser by Philomena, initiated a friendship with her that Philomena’s fiancé and mother thought unhealthy; The plot of WHEN YOU ARE MINE was worth five stars, but the writing level was one star。 Hence my overall three star rating。The plot contained several strands, connecting the narrator, Philomena, a police officer to:(1) a male police officer, Darren Goodall, a domestic abuser, and his abused wife;(2) Tempe Brown, Goodall’s former mistress, also abused by Goodall, and who, once freed from her abuser by Philomena, initiated a friendship with her that Philomena’s fiancé and mother thought unhealthy;(3) Philomena’s father and uncles who are known criminals; and(4) the murder of a journalist。All these strands come together in interesting ways, and although some of the juxtapositions are predictable, others are not。 There were two surprises at the end that I did not see coming — so, good plotting。But this was written in the first person present tense, which I found very irritating。 During the first couple of chapters, there were so many “I’s” — “I was”, “I am”, “I did [so and so]”— that I would have stopped reading the book except that many of my Goodreads friends had given it a high rating。 So I plodded on and read to the end。It is my belief that only memoirs should be written in the first person and that, as a rule, fiction should be written in the third person。 Once in a while, a great writer can get away with writing fiction in the first person, but the author of WHEN YOU ARE MINE is not a “great” writer。 There were large sections of the novel in which we are “told” about domestic abuse rather than “shown” how domestic abuse works。 The fact that these “telling” sections were in Philomena’s words did not make them any less a “tell” device than a writer using the third-person to “tell” readers rather than “show” them。 Also, there are large sections wherein Philomena “tells” the reader about her past experiences and her current feelings。 We are not “shown” a more nuanced character development。Furthermore, Philomena appeared to be rather stupid。 She misses cues and does irrational things, even though she is supposed to be an intelligent, conscientious police officer; this is an inconsistency that is necessary in order to advance the plot but does not make her a likeable protagonist。 And, Philomena is supposed to be a likeable protagonist, not an unreliable narrator。 So the author failed big-time in this respect。 Although I thought the plot intriguing, I will not be reading any more books by this author, because I don’t like his writing style, which contains more “telling” than “showing”。 。。。more

3。5 stars rounded to 4。I do have mixed feelings about this book。It started very well and I felt engaged。Domestic abuse can be a hard topic to digest。Unfortunately the storyline became very repetitive and its development was in circles。 I also did not find it that thrilling。I had the impression that the author lost focus of the main plot。I did enjoy the writing and I thought that this book was a good entertainment。 I liked the main character, who was at the same time smart and naive (perhaps too 3。5 stars rounded to 4。I do have mixed feelings about this book。It started very well and I felt engaged。Domestic abuse can be a hard topic to digest。Unfortunately the storyline became very repetitive and its development was in circles。 I also did not find it that thrilling。I had the impression that the author lost focus of the main plot。I did enjoy the writing and I thought that this book was a good entertainment。 I liked the main character, who was at the same time smart and naive (perhaps too naive to be a cop) and capable of making mistakes。I had a hard time believing that the culprit was that powerful to have influence on other authorities。The big redemption happens with its conclusion, hence my 4 stars rating, but I did expect a lot more。 This was my third book by this author and it won’t be the last。 I’m planning on starting his Joseph O’Loughilin’s series, which is being adapted for the TV, very soon。PS。 I’m asking myself if I should take longer breaks between books。 I read this one immediately after reading “Redemption Road”, by John Hart, and I couldn’t stop comparing writing style。 Robotham’s seemed amateurish in comparison。 Don’t get me wrong, I do like Robotham, and I loved his other books。 I’m sure readers can understand me。 。。。more

Thanks to scriber books for my copy。 I’ve seen glowing reviews for this one, but unfortunately it fell flat for me。 Started strong, but dragged at the end, until I was just trying to get through it。 Found it somewhat predictable as well。

WOW!! Michael Robotham is quickly becoming a must-read author for me! This was fantastic!! I absolutely loved Philomena, a cop and daughter of a mafia-type boss。 So, how's that working out? Not well at all。 That situation in itself is a good story, but most of the story is Phil investigating a fellow married, highly commended detective。 Again, not working out too well, either。 This one definitely fell into the psychological thriller category for me, and I cannot recommend it highly enough, or th WOW!! A quick psychological thriller weaving domestic abuse, toxic relationships, the patriarchy and organized crime。 There are twists and turns throughout the story and while I thought I had figured it all out, I wasn't sure until the end。 My only complaint is that I think Phil would have been smart enough to avoid some of the situations - but that is true in most thrillers。。。 Fun book though! It’s only January 9 but this is one of the best books I have read in the past few weeks。 It held my attention and kept me guessing until the very end。 Definitely one of my favorite authors。

Did Michael Robotham write this book?? I love his books and have been so excited to read this (hopefully) stand alone。 Book got off to a good start and premise。 And the final twist was one I didn’t see coming; BUT, I can’t believe he wrote such a dim protagonist! Honestly, her naïveté and short-sidedness for a supposed met police officer were totally unbelievable。 There are so many issues here with her fiancé and family…。I。 Just。 Can’t。

Overall, I really enjoyed this story! It was a dark thriller, fast paced, and easy to get in to the story。 I liked Philomena’s character a lot, although some of her actions were a little unbelievable。 The ending was also surprising and kept me guessing all the way until the end。

I could not put this down。 I have not read many books by this author, but I will be seeking them out now。This is a stand alone book by the author。 The characters were instantly gripping and interesting and there were many twists and turns and ups and downs。。。 right to the end。 I felt carried along on the ride with Philomena, and like her, I couldnt grasp what was goimg to happen next。I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good crime/mystery story。

I stumbled across this book in my library a couple of days ago, quite different than his usual ones。 I'd bought it five years ago almost, but had not read it。 It is a frabjous read, kept me guessing until the last page。 While I always enjoy Joe O'Loughlin, this one grabbed me and wouldn't put me down。 The characters and plot are complex, well developed, and the ending is gut wrenching。 Sorry I missed this the first time around, but it got shuffled towards the bottom of the TBR stack。 I stumbled across this book in my library a couple of days ago, quite different than his usual ones。 I'd bought it five years ago almost, but had not read it。 It is a frabjous read, kept me guessing until the last page。 While I always enjoy Joe O'Loughlin, this one grabbed me and wouldn't put me down。 The characters and plot are complex, well developed, and the ending is gut wrenching。 Sorry I missed this the first time around, but it got shuffled towards the bottom of the TBR stack。 。。。more

When You Are Mine is a page turning , lights on late and not able to put down kind of read。The story has many aspects, family ( you can't choose them), stalker, domestic abuse and murder , to name a few。Phil is a police officer who truly is in the job because she wants to help people。Sometimes you just help the wrong people。Who can Phil trust when things go terribly wrong for her。I wont give anything away except to say when I thought I had all the answers, I was proven wrong。You can't go wrong w When You Are Mine is a page turning , lights on late and not able to put down kind of read。The story has many aspects, family ( you can't choose them), stalker, domestic abuse and murder , to name a few。Phil is a police officer who truly is in the job because she wants to help people。Sometimes you just help the wrong people。Who can Phil trust when things go terribly wrong for her。I wont give anything away except to say when I thought I had all the answers, I was proven wrong。You can't go wrong with a Michael Robotham book。 。。。more
